On Saturday, 25th May
1996, at 8:20 a.m. I caught a flight from Düsseldorf to Birmingham where I met
with Christian who was studying at Birmingham University at that time.
Monday was a public holiday because of Whitsuntide, so we planned to go on a little tour around Wales.
We picked up our rental
car and around
midday we dropped in at my penfriend Elayne's house near Whitchurch/Shropshire for a couple of hours
to have a chat (I met her before twice). In the afternoon we continued towards Wales and we spent the night at a
bed & breakfast place in Llangurig. |
We hadn't booked anywhere in advance, but it wasn't a problem to find a
place. The following day we reached
Aberystwyth at the coast where we took a narrow gauge steam train to
Devil's Bridge
(£6.30 each) where three bridges have been built one on top
of the other. The journey takes an hour each way. Normally the train goes all the way to Devil's Bridge but
unfortunately there was a landslide this time so we were only able to go two
thirds of the way. So when we got back to the station we took the car instead to go and see the bridges. The second
night we spent at a B&B in Machynlleth. |
Snowdonia
|
The following morning we visited
the Centre for Alternative Technology which was quite interesting (£3.00). They had displays of devices
using solar, water and wind energy. Later we arrived in Llanberis at the
foot of the Snowdon, the highest mountain in England and Wales, where we took
Britain's only rack railway at 4:30 p.m.
to reach the mountain top in one hour (£13.50 each).
It was a beautiful sunny day. We also spent the night in Llanberis. |
Caernarfon Castle
The next day
we drove to Caernarforn with its
impressive castle and we had a look at
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, or in short form Llanfair P.G.,
the village with the longest name in Britain. In the afternoon we stopped at the coastal
village of Beaumaris, Conwy and the
seaside resort Llandudno. We stayed at a B&B in
Colwyn
Bay for the night. |
Conwy Castle
|
On Wednesday the 29th we
visited the pretty village of Betwys-y-Coed and
Chirk Castle at the border to
England. At 19:10 I had a return flight from
Birmingham back to Düsseldorf.
